To
Celebrate their 20th year anniversary The Island Moving Company presented " A
Flight of Steps" - an invitation to evolving choreographers to show
their newest work
I was honored to open the concert with my Interpretive
Belly Dance solo "Wave Dancer" in 4 sections accompanied by Nigerian
drummer and singer, Wole Alade.( Dancing
to Wole's live drumming and singing probably never would have happened if I
hadn't danced with Delilah's fantastic musicians Sirocco .This performance was planned to be outside on a
huge stage at Fort Adam's but because of the pouring rain we all danced in the
Ballet Studio instead. My big challenge was dancing very
close to many folks who had never seen belly dance before, and
sometimes facing the mirror where they could watch me from both sides. We were
jam packed together like sardines into a very sweaty hot space . Many audience members had stunned expressions but when they
started clapping for the Baladi they warmed right up

Instead of the famous 7 veils - I'll try 7 next time)
1) The white veil - birth, innocence and hope
2) Lilac Veil - feminine spirit, joy
3) Deep plum veil - struggle, conflict, grief, growth
4) Fuchsia veil -celebration of me today in "full throttle"
After a ritual over all the veils on the floor I danced with all four
veils at once , flying wildly around the room - which everyone loved. I wrapped
them all together tightly - put them all around my neck like a
mantel/choker, stood with chin lifted, with full pride and dignity to face
the audience and walked to the back to lift my veils to the heavens and threw
them to the ground in ultimate freedom ( this could be interpreted as my death
and freedom at the same time).......next began the sensuous and undulating snake
dance to the floor.........................

Evolution of a Modern/ballet Dancer
to an Interpretive Belly dancer. Last year I felt very uncomfortable bearing my
belly in$01his year thanks to belly dancing, my belly is in much better
